A king duvet cover needs a king duvet insert, and ideally one that is the same dimensions or an inch or two larger than the cover, never smaller. A cover that measures 106 x 98 inches wants an insert of 106 x 98 inches; anything much smaller will slide around inside and leave you with a flat, empty border at the foot of the bed.
That sounds obvious, but king is not a fixed measurement in bedding. Different brands cut king covers anywhere from 102 to 108 inches wide and 86 to 98 inches long, so two king products can be off by half a foot in each direction. Measuring is the only reliable answer.
Why a mismatch makes the cover fight the insert
Picture a cover that is 4 inches longer and 6 inches wider than the insert inside it. Every time someone rolls over, the insert shifts toward one side. By morning it is bunched in the top corner, and the bottom foot of the cover is just two layers of cotton with nothing between them. You wake up cold at the feet and spend five minutes shaking the whole thing back into place.
The reverse problem is quieter but also annoying. An insert that is larger than its cover gets compressed at the edges. The loft is crushed, the corners look lumpy, and the cover zipper or buttons strain. You lose the puffy look you paid for.
A close match keeps the fill spread across the full surface of the bed, so the duvet lies flat and even, and the corners stay filled.
Corner loops and ties do the rest
Even a perfectly matched pair will drift a little over weeks of use. That is what corner loops are for. One piece has small fabric loops sewn at each corner, and the other has ties or loops inside its corners. Fasten them together before you close the cover and the insert cannot migrate.
Here is the fastest way to do it. Turn the cover inside out, reach in and grab the two top corner attachments, then grab the matching loops on the insert through the fabric. Tie them, then flip the cover right side out over the insert like pulling on a sock. Fasten the bottom corners, close it up, and shake. It takes about two minutes once you have done it twice.
If your insert has loops but your cover has nothing to attach them to, or the other way around, you are stuck with safety pins or clips, which work but snag and pop open in the wash.
King versus California king
A standard king mattress is 76 x 80 inches. A California king is 72 x 84 inches, so narrower and four inches longer. Most people with a Cal King bed buy a king duvet and find that the foot of the mattress shows a little more than they would like.
The fix is an insert and cover cut long enough to drape on both. Something around 106 x 98 inches covers a king mattress with about 15 inches of drop on each side, and still hangs past the foot of a California king with room to spare. If you have a thick mattress, 14 inches or deeper, that extra length matters even more, because the sides eat up drop before it ever reaches the foot.
How to measure what you already own
Lay the cover flat, smooth it, and measure edge to edge in both directions with a tape measure. Do the same with the insert. Write both numbers down. If the insert is more than 2 inches smaller than the cover in either direction, that is the source of your empty corners.
Also measure your mattress depth. Add the depth to each side plus a few inches of overhang to see how wide a duvet you actually need. A 76 inch wide king mattress that is 14 inches deep wants a duvet at least 104 inches wide to reach the bottom of the mattress on both sides.
Why buying the insert and cover together solves it
When the insert and cover come from the same maker in the same size, the guessing goes away. The cover is cut to the insert, the corner loops line up, and the drape is designed for the mattress it is meant to fit. You do not have to reconcile two different brands and their ideas of what king means.
It also simplifies replacing things later. If a cover wears out, you know exactly what dimensions to look for.
