King Duvet Sizes Across Countries: Why the Label Can Mislead

THE FIT FILE · US, CANADA, UK AND AUSTRALIA

You find the perfect striped cover on an overseas site. It says King. Your duvet says King. That should be the easy part.

Before you order, open the dimensions. A size name is a starting point, not a promise that two pieces will fit. We checked examples from four markets and found a 49 cm spread in width among the non-YumeFeel King-labelled inserts below. Even within one country, brands can cut their bedding differently.

Five labels, five different rectangles

This is a dated comparison of listed dimensions, not a national sizing standard or a quality ranking. We used filled bedding dimensions throughout. A quilt cover is the empty outer layer; a quilt in the Sheridan example is the filled bedding.

Queen 245 by 250 cm, King 285 by 250 cm and California King 275 by 265 cm duvets drawn at the same scale. King is widest; California King is longest.
YumeFeel’s three duvet cuts are drawn to one scale. Check both dimensions: King is widest, while California King is longest. This drawing shows size, not loft or warmth.

Our illustration compares width only. It does not depict loft, warmth or how the products look on a bed. The table supplies both dimensions.

The Company Store uses a combined King/Cal. King label for this example. YumeFeel has separate King and Cal King cuts. Neither naming approach tells you what a cover from another brand will do. The measurements do.

The cover is the first fit test

Imagine placing a 285 cm-wide insert inside a 245 cm-wide cover. You have 40 cm of extra insert width to accommodate. That is a substantial mismatch, not a small styling adjustment. Going the other way can leave loose fabric around the edges.

Three illustrated insert and cover pairings: a small insert leaves empty borders in a large cover, a matched pair aligns at the corners, and a large insert bunches inside a tight cover.
These three illustrated fits separate spare fabric from a matched pair and an overfilled cover. Check the actual dimensions and the maker’s intended pairing; there is no universal mismatch tolerance.

Listed dimensions can differ even within one brand. Check its pairing instructions rather than imposing one universal allowance. Sheridan, for example, lists its King quilt at 240 × 210 cm and King quilt cover at 245 × 210 cm. Read the correct row: its bed covers have another set of dimensions.

Measure an existing cover flat, without stretching it. Use the usable body of the cover, excluding decorative flanges or ruffles. If washing has changed its size, your measured dimensions matter more than the old packaging.

The mattress is the second fit test

A cover can fit the insert perfectly while the combination gives you less side coverage than you wanted. For a simple starting estimate, subtract your mattress width from the duvet width and divide by two.

(duvet width − mattress width) ÷ 2Nominal extra width on each side, with the duvet flat and centred.

On a hypothetical 180 cm-wide mattress, a 240 cm-wide duvet leaves 30 cm per side. A 285 cm-wide duvet leaves 52.5 cm. Those figures are arithmetic, not measured drape: bodies, loft, mattress depth, a topper and tucking all use some of that fabric. Once you have checked the insert and cover pairing, use our mattress-coverage calculator to explore those surplus dimensions. It takes mattress measurements and a YumeFeel duvet size; it does not take cover measurements or check cover compatibility.

Check length separately, too. A 250 cm-long duvet over a 200 cm-long mattress has 50 cm of total extra length. How much reaches the foot depends on where you place the duvet at the head. That is a flat-dimension estimate, not a promise of a 50 cm drop on an occupied bed.

A three-minute check before buying abroad

  1. Save the exact product dimensions. Choose the variant first, then note width and length. A search snippet or a general category chart may describe a different product.
  2. Match the cover separately. Compare the usable cover dimensions and attachment points with the insert you plan to keep.
  3. Check the room fit and the full cost. Measure the mattress, then check the retailer's delivery, return and import terms for your destination.

For a YumeFeel set, the insert and included cover are designed as a pair: Queen 245 × 250 cm, King 285 × 250 cm and Cal King 275 × 265 cm. Choose the dimensions first, then choose Air, Cloud or Royal for the warmth and feel you prefer.

Sources and method

Prepared by YumeFeel from the official brand pages linked in the table. Inches were converted using 2.54 cm per inch and rounded to one decimal place; the width spread is about 49 cm. The examples were selected to demonstrate fit differences, not to represent every product in each market. We have not physically measured or tested the competing products. Recheck the selected variant before ordering.
