How to Choose a Duvet Size That Fits Your Actual Bed

Measure once · Choose with confidence

The duvet size you want is the one that reaches where you want it to reach. Start with the bed you own, including its topper and frame, rather than assuming its size name settles the question.

Measure the mattress width, choose the side drop you like, then check the duvet's width and length. Finally, pair it with a cover that fits. Those four checks prevent most of the confusion between Queen, oversized Queen, King and California King.

Start with the edge you want to see

Do you want the duvet to finish near the mattress bottom, hang over the frame, or leave a strip of wood visible? Measure from the mattress top down to that point. This is your desired side drop. Measure the top-to-floor distance too so you know the lower limit.

A 96-inch duvet spans a 60-inch Queen mattress with 18 inches of flat fabric allowance on each side. A separate bed cross-section shows that mattress depth, curves and loft use that allowance.
A 96-inch duvet over a 60-inch Queen leaves 18 inches of flat allowance per side. Mattress depth, the curve over the edge and duvet loft use some of that allowance, so it is not a guaranteed hanging drop.

A flat planning formula, not a finished drape guarantee. Loft, the curve over the edge, bodies and tucking use additional fabric.

For example, a 60-inch-wide mattress with an 18-inch drop gives a starting width of 60 + (2 × 18) = 96 inches. If your mattress and topper are 12 inches deep, that ideal flat drop extends six inches below them. Check whether that reaches the frame or leaves the floor clearance you want.

If you already have a duvet, put it on the bed and measure the shortfall. “I need three more inches on each side” is a more useful shopping note than “I need something bigger.” It translates into six more inches of total width.

Separate a coverage problem from a position problem

Before ordering, lay your current duvet where it sits when you sleep, rather than where it looks best for a photograph. Centre it across the mattress. Then check the two sides and the foot separately.

  • One side is short: first check whether the duvet has drifted off centre or the insert has shifted inside its cover.
  • Both sides are short: measure the extra width needed on each side. Add those two amounts to the present duvet width.
  • The foot is short: record the extra length needed and the head position you want to preserve. More width cannot supply more length.

Check the cover label as well as the insert. If a roomy cover has an unfilled edge, buying an even larger cover will not fix the missing filling beneath it.

Compare those measurements with the available cuts

Current YumeFeel duvet and matching cover dimensions, width × length
Cut Centimetres Rounded inches Useful starting point
Queen 245 × 250 96 × 98 Queen; also Full when the extra coverage suits
King 285 × 250 112 × 98 King; a wider option for some Queen beds
California King 275 × 265 108 × 104 A longer, narrower cut than our King

These dimensions apply to Air, Cloud and Royal. Use the centimetre specification when matching another piece precisely; the inch numbers are rounded. The cut tells you the coverage, while the filling and warmth tell you how the duvet feels.

Queen 245 by 250 cm, King 285 by 250 cm and California King 275 by 265 cm duvets drawn at the same scale. King is widest; California King is longest.
YumeFeel’s three duvet cuts are drawn to one scale. Check both dimensions: King is widest, while California King is longest. This drawing shows size, not loft or warmth.

Check length as a separate measurement

For a 98-inch-long duvet on an 80-inch-long mattress, the difference is 18 inches. If the duvet starts level with the mattress head, that is the nominal length available beyond the foot, before allowing for loft and the edge.

Moving the whole duvet toward the foot increases that overhang while leaving more of the head uncovered. Folding the top back without moving the duvet does not shift the foot edge. Try the placement you actually use when sleeping, with pillows where you like them.

If your main problem is length, sizing from YumeFeel Queen to King does not solve it: both are 250 cm long. Our King versus Cal King guide shows the tradeoff.

Two worked examples that lead to different cuts

A Queen bed needs more side coverage

Suppose a 60-inch-wide US Queen mattress carries our rounded 96-inch Queen duvet. Its flat starting allowance is 18 inches each side. Moving to our rounded 112-inch King adds 16 inches of total width, or eight inches per side when centred. Both cuts remain 98 inches long in the rounded chart.

That is useful if width is the problem and the larger cut clears the floor and furniture. It also means buying a compatible King cover. Keep the fitted sheet sized for the Queen mattress; buying an entire King sheet bundle would answer the wrong measurement.

A King bed needs more length, not width

Our Cal King cut adds about six inches of length compared with our King, while giving up about four inches of width. On a nominal 76-inch-wide US King mattress, the flat side allowance changes from about 18 inches to about 16. This may be a worthwhile trade if length is the issue, but measure the sides before accepting it.

These are planning calculations from rounded inch dimensions, not measurements of a duvet hanging over sleepers. Use the centimetre specifications for an exact insert-to-cover pairing.

Three pieces, three fit questions

Duvet

Will its width and length cover the mattress the way you want?

Cover

Does its usable pocket match the insert's intended dimensions?

Fitted sheet

Does it fit the mattress width, length and depth?

A King duvet on a Queen mattress still needs a cover for that King duvet and a fitted sheet for that Queen mattress. If you buy a larger set that includes sheets, check every component rather than carrying the duvet size over to the whole bed.

Save a fit note you can actually shop from

Mattress: width ___ × length ___; depth including topper ___.
Desired finish: left drop ___; right drop ___; foot position ___.
Chosen filled duvet: width ___ × length ___.
Compatible cover: width ___ × length ___; matching attachment positions ___.
Separate sheet check: mattress dimensions and pocket range ___.

Use the same units throughout. Add a photograph of the current bed only as a reminder of the look; the written measurements are what settle the order.

Before you size up, check the ordinary chores

More width means more bedding to lift and dry. Check machine capacity and the product's care instructions, particularly if you prefer a substantial fill. Check floor clearance on both sides, including the narrow side beside a wall or nightstand.

For an existing cover you love, use our cover-to-insert fit guide before replacing the filling. For a deeper Queen drape, see the oversized Queen examples.

Then take your measurements to the size guide and fit calculator. Once the rectangle is right, choose Air, Cloud or Royal by the warmth and feel you want.

How this guide handles sizes

Current YumeFeel dimensions checked on 1 October 2026. Worked inch examples use a standard US Queen mattress and rounded duvet dimensions. The measuring method also works in centimetres, wherever you shop. UK, Australian, Canadian and US size names may lead to different products; compare actual measurements using our cross-country size examples.
